Theatre Lampegiet – Lighting with custom design and automation
Theatre Lampegiet is a theatre in the centre of Veenendaal, established in 1988 and since then a striking location in the town centre.
The theatre has taken a step towards a new lighting solution and approached the company LEDesign to bring this special project to life. The result: an atmospheric, sustainable, and fully tailor-made lighting installation that meets all technical and aesthetic requirements.
Mark Vreeswijk, owner of LEDesign, says: “The process began with an extensive site visit. After the first and subsequently a more specific second demo, followed by consultation and feedback, a perfectly fitting solution was created for this beautiful location. Once approved, the fixtures went into production only 50 kilometres away, and we also carried out the complete installation.”
For this project, the choice was made for CLS fixtures, manufactured in Wijchen. Mark explains: “The choice for these fixtures was obvious to us; quality and functionality are important characteristics. The selected models, Ruby Compact Surface, met the required specifications exactly and fitted in size within the existing environment. In this way, we were able to achieve the desired atmosphere, coverage, and light output, with the assurance that the solution can also be reused in the future new building.”
This makes the choice sustainable, but it is not the only factor that LEDesign takes into account when designing the lighting for a theatre. The company looks at the overall atmosphere, the right light colour, technical specifications, architectural conditions, and ease of installation, always with sustainability as a common thread. Their specialism lies in custom design and automation, which in this project came fully into its own.
For controlling the Ruby fixtures, DMX via the theatre was chosen, supplemented with a CueCore2 and three B-Stations for automation. This allows the lighting to be easily integrated into the theatre’s technical system and makes complex lighting scenarios intuitive to operate.
As with every project, this one also presented an important challenge for the lighting designers: the existing ceiling. It could not be modified, and an existing part of the old fittings had to be retained. Mark says: “Our solution was specially designed brackets with which the CLS fixtures were placed inside the old housings, perfectly aligned and without protruding below the ceiling.”
In addition, the installation conditions played a major role. The attic was not suitable for walking, meaning that much of the work had to be carried out using bridges and safety harnesses. Existing fittings had to be adapted, and new cabling and infrastructure were installed in a hot, tight space.
Despite the challenges, the result is an installation that LEDesign is proud of: a bespoke solution that fulfilled all wishes and was technically detailed to perfection. “The project is highly appreciated by the client and other parties involved. In fact, there are now discussions with similar theatres that were inspired by this solution.”
Theatre Lampegiet proves that custom design, technical expertise, and the quality of CLS fixtures together lead to a sustainable and future-proof lighting solution. As they say at LEDesign: “creating beautiful work”.
